Some basic knowledge of poster printing and production

Posters are generally printed on coated paper, mainly using 128g/m ², 157g/m ² copperplate paper, and sometimes 200g/m ² copperplate paper. Please note that paper that is too thin is prone to breakage and not suitable for indoor or outdoor posting, while paper that is too thick is harder and not easy to post. Some posters are also printed with adhesive stickers for easy posting.

General posters are mainly used for product image display and are often printed in color. Spot color technology is also applied to poster printing, usually without film covering. The majority of posters are square in shape, often designed vertically with a smaller proportion of horizontal design. Some posters with special requirements may also use more complex shapes and require cutting with a die-cutting machine. When designing a poster, the design scheme and finished product size should be determined first, and preparations should be made before the design.

1、 Printing poster design size

The design size of the printed poster, the finished size of A4-A1 is:

A1 (split) -840mmX570mm
A2 (four open) -570mm X420mm
A3 (eight open) -420mmX285mm
A4 (16 split) -285mmX210mm

These dimensions are all finished sizes. If it is for printing, a 3mm “bleed” should be added on each side during design (i.e. the size added to ensure that a large number of printed products are cut together without leaving white edges). When designing posters for printing, the page should be set to:

A1 (split) -846mmX576mm
A2 (four open) -576mmX426mm
A3 (eight open) -426mmX291mm
A4 (16 split) -291mmX216mm

2、 Precautions for poster printing:

1. The design manuscript needs to add 3mm of bleeding (referring to the part outside the finished product size, which will be cut off before binding the printed material) on the top, bottom, left and right sides of the image. Important text information or content should be placed at least 8mm away from the edge of the image, so that the color page will be more beautiful after cutting.

2. The printing resolution needs to be at 300dpi, which cannot be low and does not need to be high.

3. All colors must be printed using C.M.Y.K colors, and RGB or other color palettes are not allowed to indicate colors. Black text, please use monochrome black (C: 0; M: 0; Y: 0; K: 100) when designing. Black background color, C.M.Y.K four-color combination should not exceed 250% color filling, otherwise there may be ink slow drying and back printing or back sticking during cutting. The CMYK four-color values should not be less than 10% to avoid no presentation when printing the finished product.

4. The image file submitted for production should be in PSD or TIFF file format without merged layers. Do not save the image in JPG format, especially not in JPG format with high compression ratio, otherwise it will lose image precision.

3、 Printing poster layout proofreading

Typography proofreading is a very important job, mainly to check whether the text content is correct and whether the poster image materials are misplaced. Check if all the content that needs to be displayed has been written, once the poster is printed, it cannot be changed anymore.
